Can you guess where Mr West is?
"Health warning: exercise makes you fat" Do you believe it?
This headline, which could be found in the Sunday Telegraph on the 23rd August, is almost unbelivable! But they seem to have 2 good pieces of evidence to back up their claim.
It isn't until you read the "Bad Science" column in the Guardian 1 week later, that you feel you can really make up your mind:
The first piece of evidence was taken from a selection of 43 trials. Overall the trials suggest that people who take moderate exercise and diet loose no more weight than people who just diet. However people who take vigorous exercise and diet loose the most weight. During the 43 trials one scientist speculates that people who exercise more also eat more - this is the sentance which the Sunday Telegraph use as their evidence!
One of the authors of the second piece of evidence used by the Sunday Telegraph said this: "the Telegraph article was a complete distortion of the facts of our investigation, which showed that exercise is very effective for weight loss. They completely reversed the outcome of our study".
