Poor versus rich? Copenhagen - the final week

Last week it emerged that poor countries are worried that the deal struck in Copenhagen this week will not commit the rich countries to cutting enough of the CO2 emissions to prevent a 2 degree increase in temperature. The main reason behind this seems to be that they do not want to damage their economies.

Meanwhile the poorer countries around the world also want more support in using green technologies so that they can reduce their CO2 emissions and id dealing with the climate change. They point out that it wasn't them put the CO2 in the atmosphere which is causing the current problems.

Will a deal be struck this week and will it make any difference. Continue to have leave comments below and let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Here are some interesting links which continue some of the points you made in your comments last week:

Surely the climate of the Earth has always been changing(Ice ages e.t.c.)? Why would we want to keep the temperature the same for more than a few hundred years? Dr Gavin informed me that theres no proof that Co2 is connected to temperature increase, its all just a coincidence....

    Dear Mr Brettmiaster,

Sadly it is not proof that CO2 is connected to temperature increase that we need. This is like asking for proof that gravity is keeping you stuck to the ground. You cannot provide it but does this stop you believing in gravity?

For this reason it would also be silly to look for proof that CO2 is not linked to temperature increase and so we must base our conclusions on the evidence that is available to us, rather than wishing for an unatainable proof.

Evidence for the link between global warming and CO2 increases has been provided by an international team of thousands of scientists all of whom are experts in their fields. This evidence has been peer reviewed (reviewed by more experts) and this makes the links more plausible.

There is a little evidence suggesting that other mechanisms may be causing temperatures to rise - peer reviews of this evidence are rarely supportive.

It is important to critically compare the reliablility of evidence from scientists who are experts in their fields with members of the public who are easily influenced by rich and powerful organisations with a lot of money to make from climate change denial.

The scandel that your friend the 'Dr' is however looking for may not be so very far away. In fact he may himself have been directly caught up in it.

  5. The Climate denial industry is still out to confuse the public! A UK newspaper has published an article called: "100 reasons why global warming isn't natural"

Here is what the New Scientist say about it:

  7. What about class 8X-1 discussion? Is anyone online now waiting to talk about it. If so then what about using kind of of a live messenger like this?
    http://www.xat.com/chat/room/79255570/

Just click on your name in the bar on the right and change the picture and name. If Mr.west is alright with it then we can pretty much have a live discussion like at school. Or if you have a long term question then ask it here...

    Oh and my Question is:
What should we really believe in? The people who don't think Global warming is happening or the people who do. Its a fair fight because we are not completely sure it is actually happening. A lot of scientist claim it is but whats that to say it isn't?

  8. Nice one Cameron. I've set up the Blog so the comments should go up straight away. As long as everyone remembers to put on their names and respect the ICT code I'll keep it like that for the discussion.

I can't get onto the link you've given out because I'm still working from school!

Your question is really good. Why don't you have a read of the links on the previous 2 comments and see if it helps you.

  9. Just to ask when was everyone suppose to be on here again. And thanks Mr.West. It was a chat room style of thing.

  10. answer for camerons question
I think we should believe the people who say global warming is happening because we need to find out a way to prevent more global warming from happening.

  11. Harley,

What makes these people more convincing to you?

  12. answer to mr wests question
Theese people are more convincing to me because they are scientists and they probably know what is going to happen in the future and can help.

  13. Well done Harley.

Welcome anyone else who is just coming online. Try looking at some of the links above if you and see if you can find any good questions to ask people.

  14. I have a question...
Is global warming natural or not natural?
    ReplyDelete
  15. I think we should listen to the people who say that global warming is happening so that we can do something about it, and anyway if we dident know about it we wouldn't know to prevent it happening.

  16. Is the climate becoming more variable or extreme?
    ReplyDelete
  17. Are there any of examples of people who are already suffering because of climate change?
    ReplyDelete
  18. Yes the people in countries what have lost water and just have dry land. Also these may not be people but polar bears are suffering from climate change because the temperature increase is starting to melt the ice where they live.

  19. I think before we attempt to "act on CO2" we need significant proof from a reliable source that CO2 actually causes global warming and that the tiny percentage of it produced by humans accounts to the warming significantly. The problem is that everyone is biased. People who say oil companies fabricate evidence so they can still sell oil and yet fail to take account of the fact that so-called "climate science" is a multi-billion industry. Any proof that CO2 wasn't a cause of climate change would result in the scientists loosing their jobs.

  21. Dear cgi music,
Please have a look here for some responses to your comments:
    at :http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2009/12/50-reasons-why-global-warming.html

Proof is something we can have in maths, not the other sciences. (see section 1)

The "tiny percentage" of CO2 produced by humans is discussed in section 2. The sharp rise from 300ppm to 380ppm of CO2 has occured while humans have been producing CO2 by combustion and reducing uptake by photosynthesis through deforestation.

The strength in arguments put forward by climate scientists is that it is peer reviewed before it is published. Climate denialists do not peer review or even have to provide evidence for their claims.

You are right. Climate deniers could stop climate science with just one good piece of evidence that humans are not causing global climate change. They have not found any despite the huge resources to funds that they have. On the other hand their is an enormous pile of evidence that humans are the cause of global climate change.

A Scientific theory cannot be proven just like a judge cannot prove someone guilty. However evidence shows that the theory of human activity causing global climate change is beyond any reasonable doubt.

  22. sorry i couldn't get on at the right time.
Some scientists say that it was warmer than it is now during the middle ages than it is now and they had little to no ways to pollute, and also the ice ages happened and there were no humans there so there is a chance it is not us.

  24. well you guys certainly had a good little talk sorry i forgot all about it, but i have been on the wesite that cameron put down but know one was on it lol, umm i trying to think of a question, or mr.west could you give me a question please then i will TRY and answer.
    ReplyDelete
  25. Going back to harleys first answer, i think that she is right because we should all leave it down to the professional scientists to decide what is happening, and people that can help will do!!
    ReplyDelete
  26. If a scientist cant decide what the reason or answer is, for what ever he/she is doing, then they should take the publics thoghts aswell, you know we wernt just born to do nothing.
    ReplyDelete
  27. Philip is right we should listen to what people have to say so that the poeple that can help can do what they have to do to prvent Global warming

  28. Mr.west do we have any h/w due in tomoz??? if we do can you not give me a detenion, because i havent done it!!! You are the best science teacher ih the world!!! lolx (oh by the way that means that i havent done the home work if there was any!!)

  29. My nan was just telling me how when she was younger it snowed at lot more then it does now, the reason bein, there wasnt any pollution then and they didnt have many cars or traine's. So everyone had to walk or cycle or catch a bus she had to cycle to work everyday and the way back. so did my auntie and mum.
    ReplyDelete
  30. So i was trying to say that if we did what people did in the eailer days then there mite not be so much pollution, and in fact there mite not be any, if we are lucky!!! ;)

  31. Can we have a fun science lesson tomoz please!!!

  35. there could be a posibilty that we are poluting the world but on the other hand there is a posibilty that it is not us, my thought is that we are polluting the world but only my thoughts, what does everyone else think??? us or not us?????

Harley. Your conclusion should say what you think of the final deal from Copenhagen (try this video to help you http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/video/2009/dec/19/copenhagen-climate-change-deal ) and what you think will happen next.
