2012 The year of the Higgs?

2012 is all set to be a ground breaking year for physics. The Large Hadron collider has been getting closer and closer to finding a very important particle which is incredibly small and could be part of absolutley everything in the Universe. For 50 years physicists' best theory has been that the Higgs particle is in everything and is what gives every other particle mass. Without it gravity would not work and without gravity the Universe be a very different place! It is also possible that we will discover that the Higgs particle doesn't exist which this would be even more amazing. Imagine the Higgs particle was a car engine and we were about to break open the bonet of the car so that we could see it. If we discovered that the car was running without an engine then our entire understanding of how a car works would have to be re-thought. If we can have gravity without the Higgs particle then our entire understanding of the laws of physics will have to be re-thought! Find out more by clicking here and to watch a BBC Horizon special which will tell you all about the Higgs particle and the experiments being done at the Large Hadron Collider to try and find it. (Available for the next 11 days).

Happy Winter Solstice

Today is the shortest day of the year for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere because the tilt of the Earth is pointing the top half of the Earth directly away from the sun. Its cold and dark but just remember that tomorrow, and for the next 182 days, the days will be getting longer and longer!
